02What happened
The year
The team engineered the enzyme PETase to accelerate the breakdown of PET plastic waste, taking Gold at the Giant Jamboree in Boston — the first since 2013 — and a Best Manufacturing Project nomination that placed the project in the top five of its track. Seven years later the 2026 team returned to PETase from a completely different direction, searching the public sequencing archive for better variants rather than engineering a known one.
